boise art museum
During my time at the Boise Art Museum, I worked to develop curriculum-based lessons that were taught to school groups visiting the museum. I designed a passport lesson and activity around the works of Willem Volkersz, focusing on his experience as an immigrant escaping the violence of World War II that invaded his home country of Holland. I developed a lesson on modular art around the works of Jacob Hashimoto, drawing connections to the popular video game Minecraft. I also designed an activity around block printing where students designed, carved, and printed their own patterns. My focus within museum education is in line with visual teaching strategies. Rather than lecturing students on what they are seeing, I prefer to provide some context and then give space for students to explore their own reactions and interpretations. As an art educator, I ask, listen, and validate. What do they see? What does it remind them of, make them think of, make them feel? Their ideas matter most.
