teaching philosophy
As an art educator, I see my subject as a conduit for connection. The creation of art is the process of connecting an emotion, thought, belief, or experience to a visual representation. That process is influenced by culture, identity, era, technique, and the media used. Therefore, creating art becomes a gateway to deep connections that expand across multiple disciplines and through a variety of lived experiences.
Art is a unique space for fostering both self-exploration and empathy. Through exposure to the diversity of artistic practices, both present and past, I aim to create a variety of opportunities for students to connect: to themselves, to each other, to cultures and communities, their own and beyond. I do this through projects with a framework based on curriculum criteria, but where the students have the freedom to independently express their own interpretation, their own connection, to the theme at hand. I strongly resonate with the principles of Teaching for Artistic Behavior and believe that the creative process is for everyone.
CERAMIC CHESS SET: HIGH SCHOOL
A lesson plan I created that pushes high school students to go big. Using the coil hand building technique, students create large-scale forms using their own unique interpretation of their chess piece. Click here for lesson plan!
